Q: Why are charts not visible when I preview a micro chart or grid?
A: The most common cause of this issue is that a chart or shape has no data values. If the values are not showing in a grid column, check that the column has its data values correctly set.

Q: How do I relocate charts or text in a column either vertically or horizontally? How do I make more space between the columns?
A: Use the padding options. You can set top, bottom, left and right padding options individually. In a grid you have the option to set the padding generically so that it happens in the same way for each cell in the grid. You will find the 'Chart Padding' option in the General/Generic Properties tab. Each component in the grid also has the options of setting up padding for that component only (in the case of a grid, this will mean for the whole column). Locate the individual chart padding options in the Columns/Appearance/Layout tab.

Q: How do set a gradient background for the grid?
A: In the General/Appearance tab, set the 'Grid Alpha' property to 0, then use the gradient editor.

Q: Why do I only see one row in Xcelsius even though I have selected many more in the data source selector?
A: This is standard behavior for the grid and tree grid. When you preview or export the swf, all the data will be visible.

Q: How do I create dynamic tool tips with non-standard variables i.e. when I want to use a spreadsheet variable rather than variables like $value and $target?
A: In the General/Generic Binding tab, there is a 'Bind Tooltips' property. Use this binding option in conjunction with the tool tip tab for each column when values in the spreadsheet are to update the tool tip. Remember that this is not necessary when the variables are the standard options like '$value'. Select a range of cells with the tool tip text, the first cell represents the first column, the second represents the second column etc. Leave the cell as empty to ignore it and use the value entered in the tool tip tab for the column. NOTE: You only need one cell per column. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I set a minimum and maximum range for charts in a column?
A: Select the chart in the table in the General/Chart Columns tab. Then select the Chart tab. Where applicable, you will find the 'Chart Minimum' and 'Chart Maximum' properties. Bind or enter the values you require. Don't forget to select the checkbox at the end of each of these properties to make sure they are read.

Q: How do I set a dynamic minimum and maximum range for charts in a column i.e. a different minimum and maximum for each row?
A: In the General/Generic Binding tab, there is a 'Bind Tooltips' property. Use a spreadsheet table range where the values represent the minimum or maximum value of the respective chart in the data grid. Note that you will still have to set the Minimum and Maximum Range Value checkbox in the 'Columns' tab for each chart you wish to setup. Also note that you need a cell to represent each row and column even columns where you do not want to set a range. For those columns, just leave empty data. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: Can I include more than one data line in the charts?
A: You can do this by using the target values which are typically used for an alert as the data values. Select the chart in the table in the General/Chart Columns tab. Then select the Chart tab. Then in the Alerts/Define Alert tab, select the 'Draw Targets as Line' option. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How does the cell rollover and mouse click functionality work?
A: The mouse rollover and click options are found in the Behavior/Click Visibility tab. Select the 'Click Listen' option to listen for mouse clicks. Select the 'Rollover Listen' option to listen for mouse over events. Then select a spreadsheet cell that will be populated with the output data. This cell will receive values in the form 'row:col', for example if you click the cell in row four, column two; '4:2' will be placed in the cell. If, for example, you have chosen the cell 'E4' as the output cell, use the Excel formula '=LEFT(E4,FIND(":",E4)-1)' to extract the row value. Use the formula '=RIGHT(E4,LEN(E4)-FIND(":",E4))' to extract the column. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I hide rows that contain no data values?
A: In the General/Grid Options tab select the 'Hide Blank Rows' option.

Q: How do I setup an axis in a column header?
A: In the General/Chart Columns tab, select the 'Axis Header' checkbox for the rows where you would like an axis in the column header. Note that this option is only available for charts like the Bar Chart that have a horizontal axis. Then in the Columns/General/Axis tab, select the 'Show Axis' option. Define the axis properties in the way you want, then when you have finished, deselect the 'Show Axis' option. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I setup value labels in a column header?
A: Horizontally plotted charts can use value labels to indicate the start and end values of the axis, for example 'Jan' ... 'Dec'. In the General/Chart Columns tab, select the 'Axis Header' checkbox for the rows where you would like value labels in the column header. Then in the Columns/General/Axis tab, select the 'Show Axis' option. Define the value label properties in the way you want, then when you have finished, deselect the 'Show Axis' option. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I setup a legend footer?
A: In the General/Chart Columns tab, select the 'Legend Footer' checkbox for the rows you would like to have legends at the bottom of the grid. Then in the Columns/General/Legends tab (this varies from component to component), select the 'Show Legends' option. Define the legend properties in the way you want, then when you have finished, deselect the 'Show Legends' option. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I make the component invisible/visible at runtime?
A: In the Behavior/Click Visibility tab, select the 'Test Visibility' checkbox to tell the grid to check if it should be set to visible or not. Use the 'Status' bind property to select a spreadsheet cell to define the value that will be tested. Bind or enter the 'Key' value. When the 'Key' value matches the 'Status' value, the component will be visible, otherwise it will be hidden.

Q: How do I add the component to an Inovista container like the Floating Background?
A: The Inovista containers check a spreadsheet range to know what other components to include. To add the grid to the range, use the 'Output ID' property in the Behavior/External Bind tab.

Q: Why does the image not react when I click a path or shape even though I have 'Export Path ID on Click'?
A: For shapes and paths to be active and listen for mouse clicks and rollovers, they must be defined in the 'Path Shape Options' section. You can either 'Select List to All' or select a range of path and shape IDs from the spreadsheet. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I add a background image to the SVG file?
A: You have two options available to add a background image. The SVG Controller now allows you to include images in the SVG file. You can, therefore, add the image in Illustrator or Inkscape. Make sure all images are embedded not linked. You can also add the image in Xcelsius. This is done in the General/Options tab.

Q: Where do I setup color changes for Shapes and Paths?
A: You can setup color changes in the General/Image Setup tab. Locate the 'Path Shape Options' section. Use the bind property to select a range in the spreadsheet that defines the colors. Download an xlf with an example

Q: Where do I setup changes to text values and colors?
A: You can setup textual changes in the General/Image Setup tab. Locate the 'Text Options' section. Use the bind property to select a range in the spreadsheet that defines the text, text colors and fonts sizes. Download an xlf with an example

Q: Where do I define the visibility of layers?
A: Although layers are not a standard feature of SVG, they can be simulated by groups. Setting a group visible or invisible (or changing its transparency) gives the impression of layering. Setup the manipulation of groups in the General/Image Setup tab. Locate the 'Group Options' section. Use the bind property to select a range in the spreadsheet that defines group visibility. Download an xlf with an example

Q: Where do I setup tooltips for Shapes and Paths?
A: Tooltips are defined in a spreadsheet range of two columns. One column holds the ID of the shape or path, the other holds the tooltip. Define the tooltips in the General/Image Setup tab. Locate the 'Tooltip Options' section. Use the bind property to select the tooltip definitions. Download an xlf with an example

Q: What are the limitations of the Inovista SVG Parser?
A: A large percentage of the SVG specification is supported by the Inovista SVG Parser. However, certain aspects of the specification, for example, patterns, filters, images in masks are not supported. See the document 'SVGParserIssues.pdf' in the download package for more information.

Q: Can I add effects like 'Wipe Down' when an SVG image is opened, shown or hidden?
A: A full range of effects (e.g. Wipes, Zoom, Rotate, Blur) are available to be run when an image is created, hidden, shown, clicked and added. Effects are defined in the Behavior/Effects tab.

Q: As 10 different images are available in a single SVG Controller component, how do I switch between images?
A: In the General/SVG Images tab, each SVG Image has a manual entry or bound property called 'Load this SVG when this value matches the SVG path id defined in Cell I/O'. Set this item to any value that will be used to load the current image. In the General/Cell I/O tab, locate the bound property with the following text 'The value of the cell will be used to load the svg file that matches the load value in the 'SVG Files' tab. Do not use the Click and Double Click cells defined above.'. When the value in this cell matches the value defined in the previous tab, the image will load. Download an xlf with an example

Q: How do I scale an SVG Image?
A: The scale of the image is defined by two bound properties in the General/Options tab, 'ScaleX' and 'ScaleY'.

A: Both components have similar functionality. The main difference is that (as you would expect) the scalable component scales correctly and the non scalable component pixilates. On the other hand, you cannot rotate the non-scalable component.

Q: How do I move the component around the dashboard at runtime?
A: The text and shapes components can be relocated on the dashboard at runtime by using the padding properties. Padding is available for 'top', 'left', 'bottom' and 'right' sides of the component. All padding properties can be bound to the spreadsheet and thus can be changed when the dashboard is live. Set the padding properties in the General/Padding tab.

Q: How do I resize a Shape on the dashboard at runtime?
A: The text and shapes components can be resized on the dashboard at runtime by using the sizing properties on the main tab. The values of these properties can be bound to values in the spreadsheet. These properties vary from component to component. For example, for a box, the properties are 'width' and 'height; for a circle, it is the 'radius'. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I change the color of a Shape or Text on the dashboard at runtime?
A: The color of the text and shapes components can be changed on the dashboard at runtime by using the color property on the main tab. The value of this property can be bound to values in the spreadsheet.

Q: How do I create a toggle button with more than 2 source values?
A: You can create a button that rotates through a set of input values and outputs them to a spreadsheet cell on each click in turn. In the Behavior/Advanced Options tab, select the 'Toggle Options' checkbox. Then bind the input values with the 'Source Data' cell. The values will be sent to the cell defined in the 'Output Cell'. Download an xlf with an example(SP3).

Q: How do I create a toggle button with more than 2 source values that repeats when the mouse is held down over it?
A: See the previous point on how to create a toggle button. Then select the 'Repeat Toggle' option. Download an xlf with an example(SP3).

Q: How do I create an increment/decrement button?
A: You can create a button that increments or decrements a value in the spreadsheet by a pre-defined amount. In the Behaviour/Advanced Options tab, select the 'Increment Output' checkbox. The 'Source Data' property holds the amount to increment or decrement. The 'Output Cell' is the value the will be incremented or decremented. You will not be able to decrement below the 'Minimum' value property nor more than the 'Maximum' value. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: How do I create an increment/decrement button that repeats when the mouse is held down over it?
A: See the previous point on how to create an increment/decrement button. Then select the 'Repeat Increment' option. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: Can I create effects for the Text and Shapes that happen, for example, when a mouse pointer is moved over the component?
A: A full range of effects are available in the Behavior/Effect tab. Effects can be added for Creation Complete, Roll Over, Roll Out, Mouse Down, Show and Hide. Download an xlf with an example.

Q: What do the Filters do?
A: Filters are used to enhance the look and feel of the components. They can be used to add Bevel, Drop Shadow and Glow effects to the components.

To add the grid to the range, use the 'External Bind' property in the Behavior/External Bind tab.
